Alliterations are a fun element of poetry to explore. Alliteration is when an author uses 2 or more words with the same beginning letter or sound.
Kindergarten and first grade students can have fun “hunting” for these alliterations and then creating there own within their writing.
Here is an activity that I do with my class every year to have them search and listen for alliterations and then have FUN creating their own.
We first read Jack Prelutsky’s poem, Bleezer’s Ice Cream. Who doesn’t love ice cream!? The students love searching for the alliterations and rhymes amongst his WILD ice cream flavors.
Then we have to design our own crazy ice cream flavors! Of course, they have to be alliteration ice cream flavors. From Chocolate Chicken Cheese to Strawberry Smelly Socks – your students will be sure to come up with crazy flavors of their own.
